After the dismantling of ISIS in 2016, witnessing the utter destruction left behind was devastating to us all. However, we were encouraged by the spirit and the resilience of the people who wanted to rebuild their lives. ICRC was the first organization on the ground in Teleskof (Nineveh Plain) to provide immediate assistance to our partners on the ground to begin the clean-up efforts. Throughout the Nineveh Plain and across northern Iraq, we engaged in rebuilding not just structures which were destroyed but we became one with the people who wanted to begin the healing process. In cooperation with our partners, we repaired damaged homes, dug clean water wells, illuminated streets by returning electricity to the neighborhoods, restored monasteries, renovated schools, built a park and a playground for the children, purchased new household items for families and provided new generators for businesses, churches, and homes. However, we did not stop there. Immediately after the blast in Beirut in August of 2020, we were on the ground, visiting the damaged homes, meeting with families, offering emotional and spiritual support as well as providing monetary assistance in order for them to begin the reconstruction process with dignity and hope. After all, rebuilding is not a mere restoration of buildings; it is honoring the victims’ pain and creating hope amidst despair.
